In Tribute to Paul James Wagner April 17, 1959 – January 7, 2025

Paul James Wagner lived a life defined by commitment, passion, and purpose. A devoted family man, a transformative business leader, and a servant-hearted patriot, Paul’s influence reached across industries, communities, and continents.

With an unparalleled zest for life, Paul was wholeheartedly devoted to the things he loved—his family, his faith, his country, and his work. He found joy in the everyday: taking his granddaughters to the hardware store, journaling, finding trinkets in antique stores, or concocting his signature juice blends. He was known to proudly describe himself as a “God-fearing patriot,” but those closest to him would add: reliable, chatty, helpful, charitable, a cookie monster, an interesting dancer, and endlessly generous with his time and wisdom.

Paul earned his bachelor’s degree in business with an emphasis in management from the University of St. Thomas and graduated from Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. He joined Minnesota Wire in 1985 as a salesperson and, through tireless dedication, rose to become president in 1992 and chairman and CEO in 2000. Under Paul’s visionary leadership, Minnesota Wire evolved from a regional cable company into a nationally recognized innovator, serving advanced sectors including medical, defense, and space technologies.

His professional accolades were numerous and well-deserved. Among them:

Paul brought a rare blend of humility and ambition to everything he did. He never forgot where he came from and never stopped mentoring others on where they could go. Whether it was coaching, advising, or simply offering a kind word to a server—whose name he always asked—Paul believed in people. Everyone mattered.

Beyond the business world, Paul was a passionate supporter of countless causes and organizations, including the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota and his own charitable initiative, “Charity Park.” He held leadership roles in or supported the Association of the U.S. Army, Defense Alliance, FBI Citizens Academy, American Israeli Chamber of Commerce,

Society of Automotive Engineers, Advanced Functional Fabrics of America, and many more. He also participated in two governors’ trade delegations and traveled to over 24 countries, always with an eye toward connection and opportunity.

He loved attending family gatherings with his eight siblings, teaching life lessons to his children and godchildren, and giving advice—solicited or not—with unmatched enthusiasm. His proudest accomplishment, however, was the life he built with his beloved wife of over 40 years, Cindy, and the close-knit family they raised together.

Paul’s senior quote from Cretin High School read: “…to be the best at whatever I do.” And he was. In business, in life, in love, and in legacy—Paul James Wagner was the best.
